Today’s Prayer: Nigeria, Africa and the World · 13 October 2026

By Collins Osobase

1 Timothy 2:1–6 (KJV)

Brief introduction

A harvest can begin while hunger remains. A warning can be issued while families still face danger. A clinic can remain open while disease tests every bed, worker and caregiver. Need is rarely neat, and compassion should not wait for a neat story.

Paul urges “supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks” for all people, including rulers and those in authority. He roots this wide concern in the saving purpose of God and in Jesus Christ, the one mediator who gave Himself for all. We therefore come to the Father through Christ, asking for mercy and for wise, truthful action.

These are selected prayer priorities, not an exhaustive ranking of the world’s needs. Each concern was checked against an opened primary source on 12 October 2026. Forecasts and response targets are identified as such; they are not presented as events already completed.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You that our access to You rests in Jesus Christ, not in our merit. Teach us to pray beyond the borders of our own experience. Keep our concern honest, our words compassionate and our actions useful.

Nigeria

1. Timely care for people affected by Lassa fever

Nigeria’s latest accessible NCDC report covers 14–20 September. It recorded 11 confirmed cases and four deaths among confirmed cases that week, with cases reported in Ondo, Edo and Taraba, and called for earlier referral and stronger prevention.

Lord, help people recognise danger early and seek care without delay. Equip health workers to screen, refer and treat patients safely. Strengthen laboratories, treatment centres and public-health teams, and comfort families living with loss.

2. Food for families cut off by conflict

In an outlook update based on information available on 21 August, FEWS NET projected Emergency food-security conditions through January 2027 in inaccessible parts of Borno, with the October harvest expected to bring only uneven relief.

Father, bring food within safe reach of families whose fields, markets and supply routes have been disrupted. Protect farmers, traders and relief workers. Give public officials courage to remove barriers, prevent diversion and direct assistance to people in greatest need.

Africa

3. Children and families exposed to renewed violence in northern Ethiopia

On 1 October, UNICEF reported escalating hostilities, reports of children killed or injured, and damage to homes and public facilities. It called for civilian protection and safe humanitarian access.

God of mercy, protect children, families and the services on which they depend. Restrain violence, preserve schools, clinics and water systems, and open safe routes for humanitarian help. Give leaders the humility to pursue restraint, dialogue and the protection of civilian life.

4. Food, nutrition and safe access in Sudan

An IPC Alert published on 12 October reported rapidly worsening food insecurity and malnutrition in parts of Greater Darfur and Greater Kordofan. It linked the danger to conflict, displacement, severe drought, restricted access and inadequate funding, and warned of a growing risk of famine in some areas.

Father, sustain families whose food, water and livelihoods are failing. Protect civilians and those carrying aid. Open safe, sustained routes for food, nutrition treatment, health care and clean water, and give leaders courage to end attacks on people and the systems that keep them alive.

5. Children affected by Ebola in eastern DR Congo

UNICEF reported on 6 October that more than 1,900 children had lost, or been separated from, one or both parents or caregivers in UNICEF-supported locations in Ituri and North Kivu as of 28 September. WHO confirmed on 7 October that the epidemic remained active.

Lord, bring skilled care to those who are ill and protection to health workers. Comfort bereaved children. Help social workers trace relatives, reunite families where possible and provide safe care where reunion is not yet possible. Replace stigma with truth, patience and neighbourly courage.

World

6. Protection and accountable action for civilians in Haiti

In an update delivered on 2 October, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said people in Haiti were often trapped between gang violence and heavy-handed responses, while armed groups continued to adapt, expand and rearm.

Lord, protect people in their homes, streets and places of work. Restrain armed violence and abusive responses. Strengthen lawful, accountable protection, preserve routes for food and essential services, and give national and international decision-makers wisdom to pursue security without sacrificing human dignity.

7. Dignity and freedom for women and girls in Afghanistan

On 8 October, UNAMA said it had verified that at least 52 women and one girl were arrested or detained in Herat and Kabul between July and September over alleged dress-code violations. It warned that underreporting was likely because of protection concerns and stigma.

Father, protect women and girls from arbitrary detention, abuse and intimidation. Comfort those carrying fear or shame after detention. Give families and communities courage to uphold dignity, and move those exercising authority to end discriminatory enforcement and respect the rights and safety of every person.

Father, grant rulers and all who hold authority wisdom that values truth and protects life. Save those who turn to You, sustain those who serve in dangerous places and teach us not to confuse sympathy with service. Through Your Holy Spirit, move us from attention to responsible compassion.

We ask through Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us and is the one mediator between God and humanity.

In His name, Amen.

Reflection

Which one of these needs will I continue to carry in prayer this week?

What responsible act can follow my prayer today: checking on someone nearby, sharing verified information, or supporting a trustworthy relief effort?

Compassion is not measured by how many crises we can name. It is shown in the care we are willing to carry.
